6th Form (15-18)

Our aim is to develop the full potential of each student by teaching a carefully prepared, individual programme, specifically structured for them and delivered in small study groups.

This is perfect for students who are studying above their peer group (taking A-Levels early), those who require more support such as anxious or dyslexic students, those needing to re-take A-levels, perhaps  in need of extra tutoring and revision help and students from other countries where English is not their first language. You can also re-take a GCSE whilst studying for some A-levels.

Every student is assisted with their studies on an individual basis.

As well as personalised tuition we also offer our sixth formers the opportunity to take part in a large range of extra-curricular activities that help build confidence, emotional resilience, independence and problem solving skills. We involve them within our school community so that coming in each day to study is a relaxed and enjoyable experience where they are treated with respect.

Key Aspects of 6th Form Life at Magdalen Court:

Development of confidence and self-esteem

Small study groups with individual guidance from experienced and dedicated staff

Happy, caring atmosphere, with a respectful adult-student relationship

Range of extra-curricular opportunities to assist character building and leadership potential, many of which help with college and university applications

Our senior students are highly regarded and integrated into the school as prefects with meaningful responsibilities

Tuition at A-level

Magdalen Court School has established a reputation for providing sound tuition at A-level. We offer first-time A-level courses over one or two years, as well as one-term and one-year revision for retake courses at both A-level and GCSE level.

The effectiveness of these courses hinge upon a high degree of individual attention and supervision, with mock papers and an emphasis on careful study, revision and examination preparation.  Our well qualified staff are specialist teachers and tutors of high calibre.  They communicate ideas skilfully and are flexible around each student's way of learning.

The Revision Courses

The revision courses follow a similar format each year, involving an intensive syllabus review with emphasis on key topics and close reference to previous exam questions.  They offer an enormous boost at a critical time to those students who are seeking to maximise their potential.

Students who enrol with us usually enjoy closely monitored courses on a 1:1 or small group basis geared specifically towards the demands of their examinations.  We encourage greater student involvement in the learning process and our primary aims are to help to motivate students in their studies, to instil confidence and self-esteem and to focus on the requirements of the examinations.

Work Experience

Periods of work experience can be arranged to assist students in their choice of career and are often a valuable experience.

We have links with Exeter University's Peninsula Medical School which provides a rich experience for students considering medicine or working within The National Health Service or other health and wellbeing careers.

Are you part way through an A-level course somewhere else?

Students sometimes transfer from other institutions mid-course, when they run into difficulties. Perhaps they have been lost in a large class, need more 1:1 support or are at a place that doesn’t recognise their learning needs. Maybe they have just fallen behind for a whole host of reasons.

This is not a problem. We can see their studies through and enter them for A-levels.  AS levels and A-level modules are also available. A system for monitoring private study on the premises is available for students who have motivational difficulties.

What our school leavers go onto achieve after A-level

The majority of leavers go onto further education leading to a wide range of careers, this is usually to an undergraduate course at university, although some students join the services.

An improvement of four grades has been achieved in re-takes and some pupils have had outstanding results, such as gaining an A grade for English in one year and four A grades leading to a first-place-choice university and subject.

Past students have gained a place at Cambridge for Law with three A grades (Psychology, English & Communication Studies). This candidate is now a barrister in London. Other places have been taken up at: Oxford Brookes, Bournemouth, Bristol and Nottingham to read Law and Anthropology, Brunel University to read TV and Drama, London University to do Sports Science, Leicester to read Maths and Law with an A grade in Maths, Sunderland to read Pharmacy with A grades in Biology & Physics, The London School of Economics to read PPE with A grades for Chemistry and English Literature and Guys St.Thomas to do Medicine.

Other students have gone on to do post-graduate Law courses at University of Bristol and London, gained a scholarship for Engineering at Portsmouth University, taken Drama and Theatre Studies at Dartington, Art at Kingston College, Animal Science at Birmingham, Medicine at Bristol and another student with an A grade in French continued her studies in Toulouse.
